Technology Scare Of The Day
GM OnStar cars will upload all data unless owners opt out.
“In the notice being sent out to subscribers, and picked up by Wired, OnStar explains that from December this year it will start collecting information about everything from oil levels to mileage, and details of any accident in which the vehicle is involved – including direction of impact, seatbelt use and the location/speed of the vehicle at the time of the accident.”
And I bet they will be selling this information to Insurance Companies Nation wide (They are allowed to in thier TOS).
I can see it now (tounge in cheek).
Insurance Co. Mr Bubblehead II?
Me. Yes.
Insurance Co. This is Alice from the Acme Insurance Co and we would like to
ask you some questions about your driving habits.
Me. OK.
Insurance Co. Mr. Bubblehead II, when you applied for insurance through
our Company, you stated that you only drove 10 mikes to
and from work. Is this correct?
Me. Yes.
Insurance Co. Well Mr. Bubblehead II, our records show that you actually
drive 100 miles a day to and from work, as well a routinely
driving approximatly 5 miles over the posted speed limit.
Can you explain this?
Me. And you obtained this information how?
Insurance Co. I am not at liberty to divulge that information. You will need
to ask our legal dept. I just need you to verify if this information
is correct.
Me. And if I refuse?
Insurance Co. If you refuse to verify the information, we will be forced to
cancel your policy.
Me. Cancel away. *click*
Me. Walking out to car, opening door. Sound of wires being cut.
Now is something like this actually going to happen? Maybe, maybe not.
But the potential of it happening is there and it is open to abuse.
